What is Domino?

Domino is a small, flat rectangular block used as a gaming object, especially in board games. They are commonly made of rigid materials such as bone, wood, ivory, silver lip ocean pearl oyster shell (mother-of-pearl), or plastic and may have a number of features in common including rounded edges and black or white pips inlaid or painted on each face. They are also known as bones, pieces, men, or stones and are sometimes referred to in popular culture as falling dominoes, the Domino Effect, or the Domino Theory.

A domino is most often used as a playing piece in positional game, in which one domino is placed edge to edge with another domino that either has the same total on its face or forms part of some specified total (e.g., 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, etc). Each domino is arranged to prevent it from moving or falling until someone pushes the first one past its tipping point. Once that happens, the potential energy stored in the domino becomes available to push on its neighbors and create a cascade of movements.

The term is also used as a metaphor for any actions that have a chain-reaction, such as the collapse of communist countries in the aftermath of World War II, or a person’s death in a car accident resulting in the deaths of many other people. The term is also the title of a Weather Report album and a Steve Wariner song.

In comic books, Domino is a mutant who generates a psionic aura that alters probabilities, causing her to receive “good luck” while her opponents suffer from “bad luck.” This can range from having enemy equipment malfunction to hitting just the right button to shut down an overloading machine. It is not a psionic power she can control consciously, but it seems to be activated when she is in danger or needs help.

Hevesh is a genius at creating domino displays, and she always tests her designs before constructing them. She builds 3-D sections first and then adds flat arrangements and lines of dominoes that connect them all together. Her testing allows her to make precise corrections before the display comes into play.

As a mercenary, Domino has taken on assignments that have led her to various locations around the globe. She once worked for the Hong Kong branch of X-Corporation as well as fought alongside the mercenary team Six Pack and the time-traveling mutant Cable. She recently assassinated Flag-Smasher in Rumekistan, allowing Cable to take over the country, but later feared his messianic tendencies would lead to her own destruction. When reality was shattered and the two were overlapped in the timeline of Reality-295, Domino helped Cable restructure X-Force. When he offered her a job at his new Rhode Island headquarters, she accepted. She and Cable have shared a psionic link since, but their relationship was threatened when Halloween Jack fixated on her and wanted to snatch her out of their timeline.
