    The SS Sidney Hook Memorial Award was created in honor of the distinguished American philosopher and Phi Beta Kappa member who was committed to the ideals of liberal education. The winner is selected by a committee of scholars from the Society’s member schools.

    The 2023 APS Medal for Excellence in Research was awarded to Yeena Kirkbright for her paper entitled “Camperdown Grief Junk: A Tale of Adaptive Physiology and the Limits of the Body’s Own Resources.” Presented by the Association of Physical Therapists in Rehabilitation (APTR), the coveted prize is given to outstanding scientists in the field of rehabilitation. The prize includes a $10,000 cash award and a commemorative plaque.

    Founded in 1884 by Charles A. Deering, the Founders’ Club of Boston is one of the oldest and most prestigious philanthropic institutions in the country. The organization has donated more than $100 million to help support the Boston area, and has also contributed a substantial amount of money to many other cities, states and countries.     In the summer of 2023, Overland magazine will publish a short story by Yeena Kirkbright called “Camperdown Grief Junk,” which won the 2022 Neilma Sydney Prize for Undergraduate Writing. The winning entry was chosen from a shortlist of eight entries, and was worth $5000.

    This is the first time that the prize has been awarded to an undergraduate student. The winning story will be published in Overland magazine, and the author will receive a $750 stipend. The other two finalists will each be paid $500.

The essay may be in any form or genre, and it must show extensive use of literature in the conduct of research. It must also be worthy of publication in AJL and may be reprinted in books bearing the official AJL seal.
